Pirelli Tires - PZero Trofeo

There are a select few tire companies that can deal with the stresses and the speeds of today’s exotics and luxury cars. You will find Pirelli products underneath some of the fastest cars in the world as original equipment. More recently, Pirelli has been selected for American legends such as the Camaro SS and the Mustang GT to keep these high horsepower Detroit Iron machines under control. At the same time, you can gain an edge by switching to Pirelli too and we wanted to take a closer look at their maximum performance tire, the PZero Trofeo.

At first glance, you notice this is a tread pattern that means business. It is not for every season and not for the feint of heart. With the lack of tread, you buy the PZero Trofeo primarily for one purpose: dry grip! But the tire is a livable DOT tire that will also handle street driving and different conditions.

The PZero Trofeo is a DOT race tire that can be driven to the track, perform under extreme cornering and braking and then head home without being swapped. The PZero Trofeo is an asymmetrical tread pattern featuring wide circumferential grooves to evacuate standing water. The thick ribs in between maximize rubber on the road and are key to the unreal dry capabilities the tire has. The center ribs provide added stiffness and the utmost grip along with added driving comfort. The inner section features a greater concentration of grooves but the outer section becomes sparser for maximum contact. Derived from the tarmac rally applications, the outer groove is shallower and will become semi-slick over time. The PZero Trofeo has the most aggressive UTQG rating we’ve ever seen on a street tire with a 60-AA-A meaning it will wear faster but what a ride it will be.

Pirelli has, of course, been making bold moves in motorsport as of late. The Pirelli has become the official tire of World Challenge to provide the technology to make all of the cars competitive on an equal basis. But they have just triumphantly announced their involvement in Formula 1 for 2011. With over 100 years of motorsports heritage, everything Pirelli has learned has gone into the design of the PZero Trofeo that is available to consumers.

The PZero Trofeo features several leaps forward in tire technology. The construction of the tire is different from front to rear on those staggered setups to maximize what each wheel is doing. The geometry of the bead has been improved as has a construction which is lighter and stickier than its predecessors. The wide contact patch is afforded by broad shoulder blocks which with the stronger sidewall improves cornering dramatically. The improved center rib design provides more sure-footed braking, improved acceleration and the type of stability at high speeds drivers demand in a tire of this caliber.
